Fish Meal (nitrogen, phosphorus)

Fish Meal is a dried, ground fish fertiliser with 10.9% nitrogen and 8.7% phosphorus as P2O5. It is the strongest dry nitrogen input in the Seacliff range and suits soil building for heavy feeders such as medical cannabis, brassicas and corn.

At a glance

  • Type: single input amendment (dried fish meal)
  • Supplier certificate on file: BioGro licence 202. See the certificate and its dates.
  • Analysis: 10.9% nitrogen, 8.7% phosphorus as P2O5 (3.8% elemental P), 0.67% potassium as K2O (0.56% elemental K), 6.2% calcium
  • Use for: nitrogen and phosphorus in soil mixes, beds and compost
  • Rate: 330 g (550 ml) per square metre of bed, or 110 g (183 ml) per 50 litres of media, for the heavy feeder nitrogen target
  • Pack sizes: retail bags; commercial and bulk sizes (500 kg and 1000 kg) on enquiry

What it is

Fish Meal is whole fish, cooked, pressed, dried and ground. The protein in the fish is where the nitrogen sits, and the bone fraction brings phosphorus and calcium.

The analysis below is the Cawthron Institute report (ICP-MS) for this material. For organic input status, email store@seaclifforganics.nz. Bulk is available in 500 kg and 1000 kg lots; email store@seaclifforganics.nz for a quote.

What it does

  • Supplies nitrogen for protein and chlorophyll, so it drives leaf and stem growth.
  • Supplies phosphorus and calcium along with the nitrogen; dose it for nitrogen and the phosphorus comes with it.
  • Releases as soil microbes break the protein down, so it is a slow hump of nitrogen rather than a spike.

Analysis

NPK = 10.9 - 8.7 - 0.7 (N, P2O5, K2O); elemental 10.9 - 3.8 - 0.56

  • Nitrogen (N): 10.90%
  • Phosphorus (P2O5): 8.71%
  • Phosphorus (P, elemental): 3.80%
  • Potassium (K2O): 0.67%
  • Potassium (K, elemental): 0.56%
  • Sulphur (S): 1.20%
  • Calcium (Ca): 6.20%
  • Magnesium (Mg): 0.17%
  • Sodium (Na): 0.43%
  • Iron (Fe): 0.01%
  • Copper (Cu): 1.2 mg/kg
  • Manganese (Mn): 6.0 mg/kg
  • Zinc (Zn): 72.0 mg/kg
  • Boron (B): less than 5 mg/kg
  • Cobalt (Co): 0.03 mg/kg
  • Molybdenum (Mo): 0.07 mg/kg
  • Selenium (Se): 2.90 mg/kg

How to use

  • Heavy feeder nitrogen target of 150 ppm (about 336 kg of nitrogen per hectare):
  • Beds: 330 g (550 ml) per square metre of ground area.
  • Modified media or compost: 2200 g (3665 ml) per cubic metre.
  • Smaller batches: 110 g (183 ml) per 50 litres of media.
  • Volume guide: 2 litres is about 8.5 cups; 8 litres is about 34 cups.
  • Dose it for nitrogen only. At the nitrogen rate it also adds phosphorus and calcium, so check a soil test before repeating the full rate.

Handling and storage

  • Wear a mask to avoid inhaling particles and open in a well ventilated area.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection, and wash hands after use.
  • Once opened, keep sealed and dry.
  • Strong smell when wet; mix it in rather than leaving it on the surface, and keep it away from pets.
