A complete dry organic fertiliser blend for living soil and garden beds: meals for slow nitrogen, soft rock phosphate and lime for phosphorus and calcium, gypsum, kelp, chelated trace elements and rock dust in one bag. It suits no-till beds, vegetable gardens and potting soil.

What it is

A dry blend made by Seacliff Organics in Otago. The recipe was based on Steve Solomon's Complete Organic Fertiliser mix from his book The Intelligent Gardener, adjusted for New Zealand inputs. The batch recipe (69 kg) is fish bone meal, amino acid powder, karanja meal, gypsum, ag lime, sulphate of potash, BioAg TM-7 (humic and fulvic acids with chelated trace elements), Zelp NZ giant kelp, soluble kelp extract, basalt rock dust and andesite.

What it does

• Nitrogen mostly from meals (fish, karanja, neem, flax), which release as soil life breaks them down rather than all at once.
• Phosphorus and calcium from soft rock phosphate, ag lime and gypsum. Lime raises pH; gypsum adds calcium and sulphur without moving pH.
• Potassium, trace elements and humic substances from kelp, the chelated trace mineral blend and the humic and fulvic acids.
• Silicon, iron and slow weathering minerals from the basalt and andesite rock dusts.
• Used with compost or worm castings, which supply the biology that turns the meals into plant available nutrients.

How to use

• Avoid over application and start low.
• General garden: apply 2 to 4 kg per 10 square metres of soil. This rate replaces the one printed on older packets. Best mixed with compost and scratched into the surface, mulched on top for no-till, or dug through the soil with a small amount of compost.
• Potting soil: mix at 2.5 to 3% by volume into your medium. Top dress through the season as required.

Handling and storage

• Wear a mask to avoid inhaling particles and open in a well ventilated area.
