Coarse Perlite 20 L
Coarse perlite is an expanded volcanic glass used to add air and drainage to potting media. It is sterile, chemically inert and very light, and it suits hydroponic substrates, succulent and orchid mixes and any potting mix that needs opening up. 20 L bag.
At a glance
- Type: media, mineral aeration
- Grade: coarse
- Pack: 20 L
- Use for: aeration and drainage in potting media, hydroponic substrate, succulent and orchid mixes
- Rate: no fixed rate; our own coco and peat mixes use 30% perlite
What it is
Perlite is a volcanic glass that is heated until it pops like popcorn into a white, light, porous grain. This is the coarse grade in a 20 L bag. For larger volumes see Coarse Expanded Perlite 100 L.
What it does
- High porosity: the expanded grains hold air in the mix and let excess water drain, so roots get oxygen.
- Holds some water and nutrient solution on its surface and in its pores while draining freely, which is why it works as a hydroponic substrate.
- Sterile and chemically inert: it adds no nutrients, no salt and no biology of its own, and it does not change pH.
- Light, so it reduces the weight of a large pot.
How to use
- Blend into potting media for aeration and drainage. Our Super Coco and Pro Blend P Super mixes use 30% perlite.
- Succulent and orchid mixes: add for a fast draining, open mix.
- Hydroponics: use straight as a substrate, or blend with coco.
- Dampen it before mixing to keep the dust down.
Watch out
- Perlite breaks down to dust when a mix is reused repeatedly. For soil you plan to recycle grow after grow, pumice holds up better.

Handling and storage
- Perlite is light and dusty when dry. Wear a mask, open the bag in a well ventilated area and dampen it before mixing.
- Wear gloves and eye protection, and wash hands after use.
- Once opened, keep the bag sealed and dry.
