Selenium 1%

Selenium 1% is a low strength selenium fertiliser used in very small amounts where a soil or herbage test calls for selenium. It suits advanced growers and certified organic growers working to a soil prescription.

At a glance

  • Type: trace element salt (soluble powder)
  • Supplier certificate on file: BioGro licence 297. See the certificate and its dates.
  • Analysis: selenium 1%
  • Use for: lifting selenium in pasture and food crops where a test shows it is low
  • Rate: apply from a soil test; dissolve in water and spray for even distribution

What it is

Selenium 1% is a selenium salt diluted on a carrier to 1% selenium, so that very small field rates can be measured and spread evenly. It dissolves in water for spraying.

What it does

  • Selenium is essential for animals and people but is not an essential nutrient for plants. In New Zealand it is applied to pasture and crops mainly to lift the selenium in the feed and food they produce.
  • Plants take up selenium and can show responses to it, but the evidence for a benefit to the plant itself is mixed, so treat it as a stock and food quality input rather than a plant food.
  • Selenium interacts with the uptake of some other trace elements, molybdenum among them.

Analysis

  • Selenium (Se) 1%

How to use

  • Dissolve in water and spray for even distribution.
  • Soil and pasture: 1 kg per hectare per year (10 g of selenium), applied evenly and watered in. Selenium is a stock health trace element applied through pasture rather than a foliar feed for food crops.
  • Selenium has a very narrow margin between enough and toxic, for plants and for stock: apply from a soil or herbage test and do not exceed the rate.
