Mealworm Frass (chitin)
Mealworm Frass is the dried castings of mealworm larvae, a fine organic soil amendment with an approximate NPK of 3:2:4 and a natural source of chitin. It suits soil building, top dressing, compost teas and foliar sprays.

What it is
Mealworm Frass is what mealworm larvae (Tenebrio molitor) leave behind: their castings plus shed exoskeleton, dried and sieved. The larvae are raised on clean feedstocks with no synthetic inputs. The product is insect free, dry and has a neutral, earthy smell.
Chitin is the structural material of insect exoskeletons, and the shed skins in frass are where its chitin comes from.
What it does
- Supplies nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium slowly as the castings break down (approximately 3:2:4).
- Adds chitin, which soil bacteria and fungi break down; growers use frass as a chitin source to feed that part of the soil food web.
- Fine enough to brew into a tea or steep for a foliar, and to top dress coco or hydro media.

How to use
- Soil building and potting mixes: 5 to 10 tablespoons per 10 litres of media (0.75 to 1.5% by volume) when preparing the mix.
- Top dressing: 3 to 6 tablespoons per plant, or 0.5 to 1 litre per 10 square metres, every 2 to 3 weeks in active growth. Water in well.
- Compost tea: 1 to 2 tablespoons per litre of water in the brewer; brew 12 to 24 hours, then apply as a root drench.
- Frass is a dried manure. Dose it for nitrogen and it still brings its phosphorus and potassium along.

Handling and storage
- Wear a mask to avoid inhaling dust and open in a well ventilated area.
- Wear gloves and wash hands after use.
- Store in a cool, dry place and reseal after use to prevent moisture uptake.
